A lab-grown diamond and cubic zirconia are not the same material.

A laboratory-grown diamond is diamond crystal produced technologically rather than through natural geological formation. It consists primarily of carbon arranged in the diamond crystal structure and has essentially the same fundamental chemical, physical and optical properties as natural diamond.

Cubic zirconia, usually shortened to CZ, is a different material. It is a laboratory-created form of stabilised zirconium oxide that can be cut to resemble diamond. That makes cubic zirconia a diamond simulant, not a laboratory-grown diamond.

Both can be colourless, faceted and highly reflective. At a glance, particularly in small jewellery, they may therefore look similar to an inexperienced observer.

But beneath that visual similarity, their material properties are quite different. Diamond is harder. CZ is denser. Is Cubic Zirconia a Lab-Grown Diamond?

No. This is the most important misconception to remove. The phrase lab-grown diamond describes diamond that has been created through technologies such as CVD or HPHT.

Cubic zirconia may also be created in a laboratory, but it is not diamond. The manufacturing location does not determine gemstone identity. A laboratory can create: diamond, cubic zirconia, synthetic sapphire, synthetic moissanite and many other materials. Those materials do not become the same gemstone merely because each was manufactured rather than mined.

What Is Cubic Zirconia Made Of?

Cubic zirconia is based on zirconium dioxide, or zirconium oxide, stabilised in its cubic crystal form. Commercial gem-quality CZ is manufactured rather than mined as an ordinary jewellery gemstone.

The production process involves melting zirconium oxide with stabilising components and growing crystalline material that can subsequently be cut and polished. This creates an attractive transparent gemstone capable of imitating some aspects of diamond's appearance. But its chemistry and crystal structure remain different from diamond.

Why Does Cubic Zirconia Look Like Diamond?

A well-cut colourless CZ can be transparent, bright and highly dispersive. When faceted in familiar diamond shapes such as a round brilliant, it can therefore produce substantial flashes of light. That visual similarity is exactly why CZ became one of the world's most widely recognised diamond simulants.

But looking similar is not the same as being the same material. Glass can imitate diamond. Moissanite can imitate diamond. Colourless sapphire and zircon have also historically been used as diamond simulants. Gemologists distinguish them through their physical and optical properties.

Which Is Harder: Lab-Grown Diamond or Cubic Zirconia?

Diamond is substantially harder. Diamond occupies 10 on the Mohs hardness scale. GIA places cubic zirconia at approximately 8 to 8.5, depending on the reference and material.

An 8–8.5 hardness is still respectable for jewellery. But the Mohs scale is not linear, and the practical gap between diamond and CZ is considerable. Does Mohs 10 Mean a Lab-Grown Diamond Cannot Be Damaged?

Does Cubic Zirconia Scratch?

Yes. CZ is reasonably hard, but it scratches more readily than diamond. Over long use, small scratches and abrasions can accumulate around facet surfaces and junctions. Those tiny changes can affect how crisp and reflective the polished stone looks.

A CZ that appeared very bright when new may therefore look less sharp after substantial wear. This is a material-wear issue rather than proof that CZ has somehow transformed chemically into another gemstone.

Does Cubic Zirconia Become Cloudy?

People commonly describe older CZ as "cloudy", but that word can cover several visual effects. Do Lab-Grown Diamonds Become Cloudy?

A lab-grown diamond does not normally become internally cloudy merely because it gets older. Residue can temporarily make it look dull or hazy, while existing internal clarity characteristics, light performance or damage can produce different symptoms.

Because diamond is much harder than CZ, it is far more resistant to the surface abrasion that can gradually soften the appearance of a simulant.

Which Sparkles More?

The answer requires separating fire from brilliance. GIA notes that cubic zirconia generally has slightly greater fire than diamond. Fire refers to the splitting of white light into spectral colours. This means CZ can produce broad rainbow flashes that may actually appear more colourful than diamond.

But GIA also notes that CZ generally has less brilliance than diamond. Brilliance refers more closely to the white-light brightness associated with the stone.

So saying: "CZ sparkles less" is incomplete. A more accurate statement is: CZ can show stronger rainbow fire while producing a different and generally less diamond-like balance of brilliance.

Why Does CZ Sometimes Look More Rainbow-Coloured?

The technical reason is dispersion. GIA reference data gives diamond a dispersion value of approximately 0.044, while cubic zirconia can fall around 0.058–0.066. Higher dispersion can create stronger separation of white light into spectral colours. That can make CZ appear extremely fiery under suitable lighting.

Some buyers enjoy those broad colourful flashes. Others prefer the balance of white brightness, contrast and fire associated with diamond. Neither preference needs to be described as objectively attractive or unattractive.

Is More Fire Automatically Better?

No. Diamond beauty is not determined by maximising one optical property. Brightness, fire, scintillation, contrast and facet pattern interact. An extremely dispersive simulant can produce more rainbow flashes than diamond without producing the same overall visual character.

This is why "sparkles more" can be a misleading buying phrase. Ask what kind of sparkle you prefer, not simply which stone creates the most visible colour flashes.

What Is Refractive Index?

Refractive index describes how strongly a material bends light. GIA reference values place diamond at approximately 2.417 and cubic zirconia around 2.15–2.18. This difference contributes to their different optical appearance.

Refractive index alone, however, does not tell you exactly how attractive a finished stone will look. Cut quality and facet arrangement remain extremely important. A beautifully cut CZ can look attractive. A poorly cut diamond can perform below its potential.

Which Is Heavier: CZ or Lab-Grown Diamond?

For the same physical volume, cubic zirconia is heavier. This is because CZ has a substantially higher density. GIA reference data places diamond's specific gravity around 3.52, compared with approximately 5.6–6.0 for cubic zirconia.

That creates a useful practical distinction. A CZ and diamond with similar physical dimensions will not necessarily have similar carat weights. Likewise, if you compare the same carat weight, CZ will generally occupy less volume because more mass is packed into the same amount of material.

Does One Carat of CZ Equal One Carat of Diamond?

In weight, yes. One metric carat is always 0.20 grams, regardless of gemstone. So: 1.00 ct diamond = 0.20 g and: 1.00 ct CZ = 0.20 g.

Can You Tell CZ From a Lab-Grown Diamond by Looking?

Sometimes a trained observer may notice clues, particularly in larger stones. CZ can display broader spectral flashes and may have a somewhat different overall optical character. Older CZ can also show more visible surface wear.

But appearance alone should not be treated as a definitive identification method. Gemological materials are identified through measurable properties rather than guesses from photographs. Can a Diamond Tester Tell the Difference?

Cubic Zirconia Is Not Zircon

This is another extremely important distinction. Cubic zirconia and zircon are not the same gemstone. Their similar names are responsible for enormous consumer confusion.

Cubic zirconia is a laboratory-created zirconium-oxide material. Zircon is a natural mineral with the chemical formula ZrSiO₄—zirconium silicate.

Natural zircon occurs in colours including blue, red, yellow, orange, brown and green. Colourless zircon has historically been used as a diamond simulant because of its brilliance and fire. But natural zircon is completely separate from cubic zirconia.
