Lab-grown diamond and moissanite can both create bright, colourless-looking jewellery, but they are not two versions of the same gemstone.

A lab-grown diamond is diamond material produced through a laboratory growth process instead of forming naturally within the Earth. It consists primarily of carbon arranged in the diamond crystal structure and has essentially the same fundamental chemical, physical and optical properties as natural diamond.

Moissanite is a different gemstone. Jewellery-quality moissanite is generally laboratory-created silicon carbide, with its own crystal structure and optical properties.

That difference affects what you see. Moissanite generally produces stronger rainbow-coloured fire than diamond. Diamond produces the more familiar balance of white brightness, fire and scintillation associated with diamond jewellery. Moissanite is also doubly refractive, while diamond is singly refractive, which can create a different visual character inside the stone.

Both are very hard and suitable for jewellery. Diamond ranks 10 on the Mohs scale, while moissanite is approximately 9.25.

They are also sold differently. Diamond carat weight refers to the stone's actual mass. Moissanite sellers commonly use millimetre measurements or terms such as diamond equivalent weight, which describe approximately how large the moissanite looks relative to a diamond rather than necessarily giving its actual weight.

The right choice therefore depends less on which gemstone is universally "better" and more on whether you want diamond itself or prefer moissanite's lower-cost, highly fiery visual character.

Is Moissanite a Lab-Grown Diamond?

No. This is the most important misconception surrounding the comparison.

Moissanite sold in jewellery is usually created in a laboratory. Lab-grown diamonds are also created technologically. But being created in a laboratory does not make two materials the same gemstone. A laboratory can create sapphire, ruby, diamond, moissanite and many other materials.

A lab-grown diamond is diamond. A laboratory-created moissanite is moissanite. The term lab-grown diamond should not be used as a generic label for every laboratory-created colourless gemstone.

What Is a Lab-Grown Diamond Made Of?

Lab-grown diamond is composed primarily of carbon arranged in the diamond crystal lattice. Gem-quality laboratory-grown diamonds are principally produced through CVD or HPHT. After the rough crystal is grown, it still has to be planned, cut and polished into a finished gemstone.

Its laboratory origin is the key distinction from natural diamond. Its material identity is what separates it from moissanite.

What Is Moissanite Made Of?

Moissanite is silicon carbide, written chemically as SiC. Natural moissanite is extraordinarily rare, so the colourless or near-colourless moissanite used in modern jewellery is generally laboratory-created.

This does not make it a lab-grown diamond. It makes it a laboratory-created moissanite gemstone. That distinction should remain clear on product pages, advertisements and sales descriptions.

Why Do Moissanite and Diamond Look Similar?

Both materials can be transparent, very hard and highly refractive. When cut into familiar shapes such as round, oval, pear or cushion, they can therefore both create the bright appearance people associate with diamond-style jewellery.

This visual overlap is why moissanite is widely used as a diamond alternative. But the optical behaviour is not identical. The differences become particularly noticeable in the type of sparkle, the strength of rainbow flashes and, in some stones, the doubling of internal facet reflections.

Which Sparkles More: Moissanite or Lab-Grown Diamond?

That question needs to distinguish sparkle from specific optical effects.

Moissanite has substantially greater dispersion than diamond. Dispersion is responsible for fire—the separation of white light into flashes of spectral colours. GIA gives diamond a dispersion of approximately 0.044, while synthetic moissanite is around 0.104. That is why moissanite can display dramatically stronger red, blue, green and other rainbow flashes.

GIA describes moissanite as having more than twice the fire of diamond and slightly greater brilliance. So if by "sparkle" you mean the strongest rainbow flashes, moissanite can appear more sparkly. But that does not mean it looks exactly like a better-cut diamond. It has its own optical character.

What Does Diamond Sparkle Look Like?

A well-cut diamond balances several visual effects. Brightness is the white light returned towards the observer. Fire consists of spectral-colour flashes. Scintillation is the changing pattern of bright and dark areas and flashes seen as the stone, light or viewer moves.

Diamond therefore does not need to produce the maximum possible rainbow dispersion to look lively. Its attraction comes from the balance of those effects.

What Does Moissanite Sparkle Look Like?

Moissanite tends to display more pronounced rainbow fire. In smaller stones, the difference may not always be immediately obvious to an inexperienced observer. As moissanite becomes larger, however, its strong dispersion can become increasingly noticeable.

Some people love that highly colourful effect. Others prefer the more familiar balance of white brightness and spectral fire found in diamond. Neither preference is wrong. The important point is that moissanite does not merely imitate diamond perfectly—it has a recognisable visual personality of its own.

What Is the Moissanite "Disco Ball" Effect?

This is an informal expression used to describe the very strong rainbow flashes that can become particularly noticeable in larger moissanite stones. GIA notes that in larger sizes the intense fire of moissanite may help reveal that it is not diamond, and in very large stones that effect is sometimes described as a "disco ball" appearance.

Some buyers regard this as one of moissanite's most attractive qualities. Others specifically choose lab-grown diamond because they prefer a less rainbow-dominant optical appearance. This is a taste question rather than a defect.

Is Moissanite More Brilliant Than Diamond?

GIA describes moissanite as having slightly more brilliance than diamond, but this statement should not be simplified into: "Moissanite always sparkles better."

Refractive index and dispersion describe the material's optical potential. The actual appearance still depends heavily on faceting, proportions, shape, size and lighting. A poorly cut moissanite can look less attractive than a beautifully cut diamond. A poorly cut diamond can also fail to realise diamond's optical potential. Material and cut both matter.

Why Can Moissanite Look Different Inside the Stone?

One important reason is double refraction. Diamond is singly refractive. Moissanite is doubly refractive. When light passes through moissanite, certain internal facet junctions can appear doubled when viewed from suitable directions.

Under magnification, that doubling is one of the characteristics gemmologists can use to separate moissanite from diamond. It can also give some moissanite stones a slightly different visual texture or, under close observation, a softer or doubled appearance inside the gem.

Does Double Refraction Mean Moissanite Is Blurry?

Not necessarily during normal wear. A well-cut moissanite can look crisp and attractive without magnification. However, GIA notes that the doubling of back-facet reflections can make the internal appearance seem somewhat different from diamond.

How noticeable this becomes depends on the cut, size, viewing direction and observer. It is therefore better understood as a material characteristic rather than automatically calling moissanite blurry.

Lab-Grown Diamond vs Moissanite Hardness

Diamond is harder. Diamond ranks 10 on the Mohs hardness scale. Moissanite is approximately 9.25. That makes moissanite one of the hardest gemstones commonly used in jewellery and very suitable for frequent wear.

But diamond remains more resistant to scratching. This matters particularly for rings, where the centre stone may encounter desks, doors, bags and other objects during everyday use.

Is the Difference Between 9.25 and 10 Small?

The numbers look close, but the Mohs hardness scale is not linear. A one-number difference near the top does not mean the stones differ in scratch resistance by only a few percent. Diamond remains exceptional in resistance to abrasion. Moissanite is also highly scratch-resistant, but it is not as hard as diamond.

That said, hardness is only one aspect of durability.

Hardness Is Not the Same as Toughness

Hardness describes resistance to scratching. Toughness describes resistance to breaking or chipping. A diamond can be extremely hard and still chip if struck forcefully at a vulnerable point or direction. Moissanite is also a durable jewellery material but should not be marketed as indestructible.

Which Is Better for Everyday Wear?

Both are suitable for regular jewellery wear. GIA specifically describes moissanite's 9.25 hardness as making it highly suitable for engagement rings and fine jewellery. Diamond's greater hardness gives it the advantage for maximum scratch and abrasion resistance.

But the complete jewellery item still matters. A diamond can be lost from damaged prongs. A moissanite can be damaged by sufficiently severe impact. Metal can scratch regardless of the centre stone. The material does not remove the need to care for the jewellery.

Which Is Better for an Engagement Ring?

Both can work extremely well. The decisive question is what the wearer wants the centre stone to represent and look like.

A lab-grown diamond is the more direct choice if you specifically want: diamond material, diamond optical behaviour, diamond laboratory grading and the greatest available scratch resistance.

Moissanite can be a strong choice if you prefer: a diamond alternative, pronounced rainbow fire, excellent durability and generally lower gemstone cost.

The answer should therefore not be framed as: "Which one is fake?" Neither material is fake when sold accurately. The meaningful question is: "Do I want diamond or moissanite?"

Which Looks More Like a Natural Diamond?

Lab-grown diamond. That follows from the material itself. Natural and laboratory-grown diamonds share essentially the same fundamental chemical, physical and optical properties. Moissanite is a different material with a higher refractive index, far greater dispersion and double refraction.

Therefore, if your goal is reproducing the physical and optical characteristics of diamond while avoiding natural geological origin, lab-grown diamond is fundamentally closer.

Can Most People Tell Them Apart?

It depends on stone size, cut, lighting and experience. A small, well-cut colourless moissanite can look very diamond-like to someone unfamiliar with the differences. Larger stones can make moissanite's stronger rainbow fire more obvious. Under magnification, double refraction can provide another clue.

But visual observation alone should not be relied upon for definitive identification. If gemstone identity matters commercially, appropriate gemmological testing is the correct method.

How Do Gemmologists Tell Moissanite From Diamond?

Diamond and moissanite have different measurable properties. Their refractive behaviour differs. Their dispersion differs. Their density differs. Their electrical behaviour can differ. Moissanite's double refraction can also reveal itself through doubled facet junctions under magnification.

Professional laboratories can use these and additional tests to separate them reliably. The process is easier than distinguishing a natural diamond from a lab-grown diamond because, in the latter comparison, both stones are actually diamond material.

Will Moissanite Pass a Diamond Tester?

Some testers can create confusing results. Traditional thermal-conductivity diamond testers can mistake moissanite for diamond because the two materials interact with heat in relatively similar ways. IGI specifically warns that moissanite may test as diamond on thermal testers.

Modern combination testers can add electrical-conductivity testing to help separate the two. However, even that does not make every consumer tester infallible.

Can a Lab-Grown Diamond Test as Moissanite?

Yes, under some circumstances. This is an especially valuable point because it contradicts many oversimplified online buying guides. IGI notes that some HPHT-grown diamonds can produce false moissanite readings on electronic testers. Metallic catalyst remnants within some HPHT-grown diamonds can create electrical conductivity. An electronic tester interpreting conductivity as evidence of moissanite can therefore return the wrong answer.

So: diamond tester result does not equal complete gemstone identification. Professional analysis is stronger.

Can You Test Them at Home?

Consumer testers can provide useful screening information, but they should not be treated as laboratory-grade proof. A thermal tester may confuse moissanite and diamond. An electronic tester may create other false positives. Visual inspection can also be unreliable.

If the identity of a significant stone is uncertain, use an appropriately qualified gemmologist or independent laboratory. Avoid destructive internet tests involving scratching glass, fire, chemicals or deliberately damaging jewellery.

What Is the Refractive Index of Moissanite vs Diamond?

Diamond's refractive index is approximately 2.417. Synthetic moissanite has two principal refractive indices around 2.648 and 2.691 because it is doubly refractive. This high refractive index contributes to moissanite's strong brightness and visual intensity.

But refractive index should not be interpreted as a simple score where the highest number creates the objectively best gemstone. The materials handle light differently.

Moissanite vs Diamond Dispersion

Dispersion is where the difference is particularly dramatic. Diamond is approximately: 0.044 while synthetic moissanite is approximately: 0.104. That explains the stronger spectral colour flashes found in moissanite. It is also one of the most useful ways to understand why the two can look noticeably different even though both are highly brilliant colourless gems.

Which Is Heavier: Moissanite or Diamond?

For the same physical dimensions, diamond is somewhat heavier. Diamond has a specific gravity of approximately 3.52. Moissanite is around 3.22. That difference is important because it creates one of the biggest consumer misunderstandings in moissanite shopping: a "1 carat equivalent" moissanite does not necessarily weigh 1.00 carat.

Does a 1 Carat Moissanite Actually Weigh 1 Carat?

Not necessarily when the retailer is using diamond-equivalent sizing. A carat is a genuine unit of mass. One metric carat always equals 0.20 grams, whether you are weighing diamond, moissanite or another gemstone. So if a moissanite actually weighs 1.00 ct, its mass really is 0.20 grams.

However, many moissanite sellers market stones by their millimetre size or diamond-equivalent weight, because shoppers are accustomed to imagining diamond sizes in carats. That is a different concept.

Actual Carat Weight vs Diamond Equivalent Weight

Actual carat weight tells you what the gemstone physically weighs. Diamond equivalent weight, sometimes abbreviated DEW, is a size-comparison convention intended to communicate approximately what weight of diamond would have similar physical dimensions. Those numbers are not automatically identical.

A seller might therefore describe a moissanite as: 1 ct diamond equivalent without meaning: actual gemstone weight = exactly 1.00 ct. The phrase after "carat" matters.

Why Does Moissanite Weigh Less at the Same Size?

Because it has lower density than diamond. For example, a round moissanite and a round diamond could both measure approximately 6.5 mm in diameter, yet the moissanite would normally weigh less.

Charles & Colvard gives a useful illustrative example: a 6.5 mm round diamond weighing about 1.00 ct corresponds to a similarly sized moissanite weighing approximately 0.88 ct actual weight. That should not be converted into a universal formula for every shape and cut. It simply demonstrates the principle: same dimensions does not equal same carat weight when materials have different densities.

Why Moissanite Is Often Sold in Millimetres

Millimetre measurements avoid this confusion. If a ring setting requires a stone approximately 6.5 mm wide, a 6.5 mm moissanite and 6.5 mm diamond can be compared physically even though their actual carat weights differ. That is why millimetres can be especially useful for moissanite. They describe actual external dimensions rather than borrowing diamond's weight language.

Should Aurelia Call Moissanite "2 Carats"?

Only if the meaning is unmistakable. If the stone actually weighs 2.00 ct, that can be described as an actual carat weight. If the seller means the stone has dimensions comparable with an approximately two-carat diamond, the copy should say something like: approximately 2 ct diamond-equivalent size or provide the actual millimetre dimensions.

Do not present diamond-equivalent weight as though it were independently measured actual mass. This is particularly important for product schema and specifications.

Is Carat Weight the Same Across All Gemstones?

The unit is the same. One carat is always 0.20 grams. What changes is density. Different gemstone materials need different amounts of physical volume to reach the same weight. That is why you cannot assume one-carat diamond, one-carat moissanite and one-carat cubic zirconia all have identical dimensions.

Which Looks Bigger at the Same Actual Carat Weight?

Because moissanite is less dense than diamond, a moissanite of the same actual weight can generally occupy somewhat more volume. But face-up appearance also depends on cut proportions and shape, so this should not be converted into a universal millimetre promise.

Which Is Cheaper: Moissanite or Lab-Grown Diamond?

Moissanite generally occupies a lower gemstone-price category than comparable lab-grown diamond. However, this article should not use a permanent percentage such as: "moissanite is always 70% cheaper." Both markets change. Retail jewellery prices also include more than the centre stone.

Metal, setting, craftsmanship, brand, design complexity and side stones can all affect the finished price. The safest evergreen conclusion is that moissanite generally provides a lower-cost route to a large colourless centre-stone appearance than diamond.

Is Moissanite Better Value?

That depends on what "value" means to you. If your objective is obtaining the largest durable, colourless-looking gemstone for the lowest initial stone cost, moissanite can offer compelling value. If your objective is specifically to own diamond material, a lower price does not make moissanite an equivalent substitute because it changes what you are buying.

Value therefore needs to be judged against the intended product, not simply the number on the price tag.

Do Lab-Grown Diamonds Hold More Value Than Moissanite?

Neither should be marketed as a guaranteed financial investment. Lab-grown diamonds can have secondary-market value, although resale conditions and prices vary. Moissanite's loose-stone replacement cost is generally lower, so a buyer should not assume that a large diamond-equivalent moissanite will command a large second-hand price merely because its visual size is substantial.

Does Moissanite Have a Diamond Grading Certificate?

Moissanite should not be represented as though it had been graded as diamond. A laboratory can identify and document moissanite, and specialist reports or certificates for moissanite can exist. IGI, for example, has provided Certificates of Authenticity for particular commercial lab-grown moissanite programmes. But such a document identifies the stone as moissanite. It does not transform it into an IGI laboratory-grown diamond.

Can IGI Identify Moissanite?

Yes. IGI states that its gemstone-screening procedures distinguish naturally mined diamonds, laboratory-grown diamonds and simulants. Moissanite is treated as a separate material category rather than as another form of diamond.

This is why a buyer should pay attention to what material the report identifies, not merely whether a laboratory's logo appears on a document.

Is an IGI Moissanite Certificate the Same as an IGI Diamond Report?

No. The scope and material being examined are different. An IGI Laboratory Grown Diamond Report documents a laboratory-grown diamond. A certificate or report identifying moissanite documents moissanite. Do not treat those documents as interchangeable merely because both may come from a gemmological laboratory.

Can Moissanite Have a Serial Number or Laser Inscription?

Some branded moissanite products can have girdle inscriptions or other identifying markings. That is not the same thing as a diamond grading report number automatically applying to every moissanite. A girdle marking should be interpreted according to the manufacturer or laboratory that issued it. Likewise, seeing a number under magnification does not by itself establish gemstone identity.

Can a Fake Diamond Report Be Attached to Moissanite?

Fraud is possible, which is another reason to verify gemstone identity rather than trusting paperwork blindly. GIA has documented a case involving synthetic moissanite carrying a fraudulent GIA inscription corresponding to a different diamond report. Laboratory testing identified the stone as moissanite because its actual physical and optical properties did not match diamond.

That case is a useful reminder: an inscription or report number is evidence only when it genuinely corresponds to the physical gemstone.

Does Moissanite Look Yellow or Grey?

Modern colourless moissanite can appear very white, but some stones can show slight yellow, grey or other tonal effects from certain directions or lighting. GIA notes this visual possibility.

The appearance depends on the material, manufacturer, cut and viewing conditions. Do not assume all moissanite is obviously yellow. Likewise, do not assume every "colourless" moissanite will look identical to a colourless diamond.

Can Moissanite Be Coloured?

Yes. Moissanite can be produced in colours beyond the near-colourless range, including yellow, blue and darker variants. That does not make it a coloured diamond. Again, gemstone identity and colour are separate pieces of information.

What About Round Moissanite vs Round Lab-Grown Diamond?

Round brilliant-style cutting can make both stones look highly lively. The biggest optical difference is typically the stronger rainbow dispersion of moissanite. In smaller rounds, the distinction may be relatively subtle for some wearers. As size increases, the optical personality of moissanite can become easier to recognise.

What About Emerald-Cut Moissanite vs Lab-Grown Diamond?

Step cuts create a particularly interesting comparison. Emerald-cut diamonds are valued for broad flashes, geometric reflections and a hall-of-mirrors effect rather than maximum rainbow scintillation. Moissanite's double refraction and high dispersion can create a somewhat different step-cut appearance.

Buyers who specifically love the crisp optical character of a diamond emerald cut may prefer lab-grown diamond. Others may enjoy moissanite's interpretation of the shape. This is a visual preference, not a rule that one material cannot be step cut.

Both can work very well. Earrings generally experience less impact and abrasion than rings, so moissanite's already-high hardness is more than adequate for many designs.
