How to Store Diamond Jewellery Properly

Store diamond jewellery in a clean, dry place where individual pieces cannot rub against one another. Use: separate padded compartments, individual soft pouches or dedicated jewellery holders. Keep necklaces and fine chains separated so they cannot knot together. Keep diamond-set pieces away from softer gemstones and exposed precious-metal surfaces. Make sure jewellery is dry before putting it away. For travel, use a structured jewellery case or pouch system with separate sections rather than placing several pieces loose inside one bag. Diamond is harder than the precious metals normally used to hold it. That means a diamond edge can scratch: gold, platinum, silver, and metal on neighbouring jewellery. Store rings individually where possible. A padded ring slot works well because it limits movement and keeps neighbouring settings apart. Then arrange the chain naturally rather than dropping it into a pile.

GIA specifically identifies organisers with necklace and bracelet hanging posts as a useful way to reduce tangling. If hanging a necklace, make sure the storage system supports fine jewellery safely. Keep one chain away from another chain — two separate chains lying neatly beside each other can still become tangled if they are in a loose pouch that moves repeatedly. Travel makes this more likely.

A tennis bracelet should be stored in a way that respects its normal articulation. Lay it naturally in a separate padded section. Do not: twist it tightly, fold it beyond its normal movement, or place heavy jewellery directly on top of it. For chain and station bracelets, close the clasp where appropriate and arrange the bracelet so the chain does not knot around its own stations or fastening. For bangles and cuffs, rigid jewellery needs space rather than compression. Do not force a bangle into a compartment smaller than its natural shape. Do not repeatedly bend an open cuff to make it fit a jewellery box unless that specific cuff is designed for adjustment.

If jewellery is visibly covered with: skin oils, cosmetics, soap residue, or other contamination, clean it appropriately before long-term storage. There is no need to wash a piece again if it is already clean. After cleaning, allow the piece to dry completely. GIA notes that materials such as pearls and opals interact differently with environmental moisture and should not automatically be treated like diamond-only jewellery. GIA advises carrying jewellery with you rather than placing it in checked luggage when travelling. For long-term storage, a clean, protected location away from unnecessary moisture and chemical exposure is generally preferable. Keep jewellery away from household chemicals — do not store fine jewellery beside: bleach, cleaning products, hairspray, perfume spills, or other chemicals. The ideal storage location should not be at the edge of a shelf, next to an open sink, within reach of children, or where a jewellery box is frequently knocked to the floor.

If a ring has: a bent prong, loose diamond, cracked shank, or damaged setting, putting it into a padded box protects it temporarily but does not repair the problem. If a stone may already be loose: stop wearing the piece, avoid vigorous cleaning, place it into secure individual storage, and arrange inspection. Do not allow it to move around loosely in a jewellery box while waiting for assessment.
