Buying a lab-grown diamond becomes much easier when you know what questions actually affect the purchase.

You do not need to become a gemmologist or memorise every grading chart. You do need to establish what the stone is, how it is documented, whether its proportions and appearance suit you, what the price actually includes and—if it is already set into jewellery—what you know about the complete piece rather than only the diamond.

This distinction matters because buying a loose centre diamond is different from buying a finished ring, pair of earrings, necklace or tennis bracelet. A loose diamond can be weighed and examined independently. A finished jewellery item introduces additional questions about total carat weight, metal, setting construction, sizing, clasp security, documentation and after-sales terms.

The 25 questions below are therefore divided into two groups: Questions 1–14: essential questions about the diamond itself; Questions 15–25: additional questions to ask when buying finished diamond jewellery.

Use the questions that apply to the purchase in front of you rather than forcing every buyer to ask the same things.

Questions about the diamond itself:

These questions are more useful when you understand what each is designed to reveal.

Part One: Essential Questions About the Lab-Grown Diamond

The first 14 questions apply to any significant diamond you are considering, whether loose or mounted.

1. Is This Definitely a Laboratory-Grown Diamond?

Start with identity. The product should clearly tell you whether the stone is: laboratory-grown diamond, natural diamond, moissanite, cubic zirconia or another gemstone.

Do not rely on vague phrases such as: "diamond alternative"; "created stone"; "eco stone"; or simply: "diamond" when origin is material to your decision.

A laboratory-grown diamond is diamond material, not cubic zirconia or moissanite. But its laboratory origin should be communicated clearly. If the wording is ambiguous, ask for clarification before considering colour, clarity or price.

2. Was the Diamond Grown Using CVD or HPHT?

The two principal commercial lab-grown diamond processes are Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) and High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT). Both can produce jewellery-quality diamond. The growth method is therefore useful information, but it is not itself a quality grade.

Do not assume: CVD = automatically better or: HPHT = automatically better. Ask about the growth method when that information is available, then judge the finished diamond on its actual characteristics.

3. Has the Diamond Received Post-Growth Treatment?

Growth process and post-growth treatment are different things. For example, a diamond can be CVD-grown and subsequently HPHT-treated to modify certain colour-related characteristics. That does not make it an HPHT-grown diamond.

Where treatment information is available on the laboratory report, read it accurately rather than assuming the word "treated" means defective. The relevant question is simply: What happened to this diamond during and after growth? Then decide whether that manufacturing history matters to you.

4. Is There an Independent Laboratory Report?

For a significant loose or centre diamond, independent laboratory documentation can provide useful third-party information about its identity and characteristics. That report may include information relating to: origin, carat weight, measurements, colour, clarity, cut or finish, fluorescence, inscription, growth method and treatment.

But not every small accent stone needs its own individual report. A solitaire centre diamond and a tiny pavé stone are different reporting situations.

5. What Laboratory Issued the Report?

Do not stop at: "Yes, it is certified." Ask who issued the document and what type of report it is.

IGI currently provides detailed Laboratory Grown Diamond Reports that identify lab-grown origin and document the 4Cs. GIA currently uses a different system for eligible colourless-to-near-colourless laboratory-grown diamonds. Since October 2025, its applicable service classifies qualifying stones as Premium or Standard rather than using its previous natural-diamond-style lab-grown nomenclature.

Therefore, do not expect every laboratory report to contain identical fields or terminology.

6. Can the Report Number Be Independently Verified?

If a seller presents an independent laboratory report, check that the report can be matched to the laboratory's own record. For IGI, use IGI's official report-verification service. For GIA documentation, use GIA's official Report Check where applicable.

Independent verification helps establish that the report number corresponds to a genuine laboratory record. GIA itself recommends checking report information through its official database when buying diamonds online.

7. What Is the Diamond's Actual Carat Weight?

Carat is weight. One metric carat equals: 0.20 grams or: 200 milligrams. Do not confuse carat with visible diameter. A 1.00 ct diamond is not guaranteed to have one particular millimetre width.

The report should tell you the actual weight of a loose individual diamond where applicable. For a multi-stone piece, however, the product may instead advertise total carat weight. That distinction becomes especially important with finished jewellery.

8. What Are the Diamond's Millimetre Measurements?

Carat tells you how much the diamond weighs. Measurements tell you more about its physical dimensions. This is particularly important when comparing stones with the same carat weight. Two one-carat diamonds can distribute their mass differently. One may face up wider. Another may retain more weight in its depth.

9. What Colour Information Is Reported?

Do not simply ask: "Is it colourless?" Ask what the actual laboratory documentation says. IGI currently uses detailed colour grades for applicable laboratory-grown diamonds, while current GIA lab-grown assessments use their separate Premium/Standard framework.

Then consider whether the colour appearance works for you. Diamond size, shape and setting metal all influence how much warmth you perceive. A buyer should not automatically assume that only D, E or F is acceptable.

10. What Clarity Information Is Reported, and Is the Stone Eye-Clean to Me?

A high clarity grade can be desirable, but buying clarity should not become a race towards the highest possible letters. Ask: What is the grade? What inclusions create that grade? Where are they? Are they visible to you without magnification? Could any significant surface-reaching feature create a durability concern?

An eye-clean VS2 may make more sense for one buyer than a much higher-clarity stone whose microscopic advantages they cannot see. Another buyer may specifically value VVS or IF documentation. The correct choice depends on your priorities and the individual diamond.

11. How Has the Cut Been Assessed?

For many buyers, cut is one of the most important visual considerations because it strongly affects how the diamond interacts with light. But first establish what the word cut means on the report.

GIA's formal overall cut grade applies to standard round brilliants, while fancy shapes are handled differently. IGI uses its own methodology and also currently provides formal fancy-shape cut grading.

So do not accept a generic retailer statement such as: "Ideal Cut" without knowing who defined the term. Ask: Is this a laboratory cut grade, a retailer category or simply marketing language?

12. What Are the Polish and Symmetry Grades?

Polish and symmetry are related to cut quality, but they should not be treated as synonyms for overall cut. Polish concerns the quality and condition of the facet surfaces. Symmetry concerns the precision of the diamond's outline and facet alignment.

A report might therefore show: Cut: Excellent; Polish: Excellent; Symmetry: Very Good. Those are separate findings. Do not let a seller convert Excellent Polish into an unsupported claim that the diamond automatically has an Excellent overall cut grade.

13. Are There Any Inclusions or Features I Should Understand Before Buying?

A clarity grade compresses multiple observations into a single category. Ask what actually produced the grade. A small peripheral inclusion can have very different practical significance from a dark inclusion beneath the table. Likewise, a significant surface-reaching feature near a pointed corner may deserve more attention than a tiny internal pinpoint.

You do not need to reject every inclusion. You need to understand whether the characteristics affect: appearance, transparency or durability. That is a much more useful question than simply asking for the highest available clarity grade.

14. How Does This Diamond Compare With Other Stones at the Same Price?

This is the question that turns specifications into a buying decision. Do not compare only carat. A slightly smaller diamond may have better proportions. A lower-clarity stone may look equally clean without magnification. A G-colour stone may look virtually identical to an F in the intended setting. An oval with a slightly different carat weight may have noticeably better physical spread.

The strongest comparison is therefore: What am I gaining and giving up with this specific diamond relative to the alternatives? That prevents one attractive specification from dominating the whole purchase.

A superb centre diamond cannot tell you whether the finished ring, earrings or bracelet will suit you — evaluate both the stone and the complete piece.

Part Two: Additional Questions for Finished Lab-Grown Diamond Jewellery

The first 14 questions apply most strongly to a significant loose or centre diamond. The next 11 become important when you are purchasing a complete ring, earring, necklace, bracelet or other finished jewellery item.

The diamond can be excellent while the finished jewellery is poorly suited to you. Evaluate both.

15. Does the Stated Carat Figure Mean One Diamond or Total Carat Weight?

This is one of the most important questions for finished jewellery. Consider: 1.00 ct solitaire ring versus: 1.00 ct total weight stud earrings. The ring may contain one approximately one-carat centre stone. The earring pair could instead contain two stones contributing around half a carat each.

A tennis bracelet distributes its total weight across many stones. A halo ring combines a centre stone with multiple smaller diamonds. The product page therefore needs to distinguish: individual carat weight from: total carat weight.

16. What Precious Metal Is the Jewellery Made From?

The diamond is only one component of finished jewellery. Ask what metal surrounds it. Relevant product information can include: metal type, fineness and whether the item is plated, where applicable.

Do not assume two rings with comparable lab-grown centre diamonds are otherwise equivalent if their metal construction differs. For jewellery intended for frequent wear, the complete construction deserves just as much attention as the centre stone specification.

17. Does UK Hallmarking Apply to This Piece?

For jewellery sold in the UK and described as gold, silver, platinum or palladium, hallmarking requirements can apply once the article exceeds the relevant statutory weight threshold. A UK hallmark verifies precious-metal fineness; it is not a diamond grading report.

Current UK thresholds include 1 g for gold, 7.78 g for silver, 0.5 g for platinum and 1 g for palladium. For a particular purchase, ask whether the piece requires hallmarking and what marks it carries. Do not interpret a hallmark as proof of diamond colour, clarity, origin or carat.

18. What Type of Setting Holds the Diamond?

The setting affects: appearance, security, snagging, cleaning access and long-term wear. A solitaire might use four or six prongs. Another ring may use a bezel. An eternity ring may use shared prongs, channel setting or another construction. A pendant, earring or tennis bracelet creates different mechanical demands again.

There is no single setting that is best for every piece. Ask why the setting is appropriate for the stone and the way you intend to wear it.

19. Are the Stones and Settings Suitable for How I Intend to Wear the Jewellery?

A jewellery piece intended for occasional evening wear faces different demands from a ring worn every day. Ask yourself: Will I wear it while working with my hands? Is it likely to catch on clothing? Does the design have exposed pointed diamonds? Will a bracelet be in regular contact with desks and other surfaces? Is the necklace intended for constant wear or occasional use?

Diamond itself is extremely hard, but settings and precious metals can still wear, bend or become damaged.

20. What Are the Actual Dimensions of the Finished Piece?

Do not judge jewellery only from magnified product photographs. Ask for the relevant physical dimensions. For earrings, useful measurements may include overall height or diameter. For a pendant, consider the pendant dimensions and chain length. For a bracelet, length and setting scale matter. For rings, band width, setting height and centre-stone measurements may influence both appearance and comfort.

21. What Documentation Covers the Finished Jewellery Rather Than Only the Centre Stone?

This is especially important for products marketed as "certified jewellery". An individual loose-diamond report describes that particular diamond. It does not automatically describe the complete ring.

Ask exactly what the document covers. Is it: a report for the centre stone; a report for the complete jewellery piece; retailer product documentation; a UK precious-metal hallmark; or some combination? 22. Can the Jewellery Be Resized or Altered If Necessary?

This question applies primarily to rings and certain adjustable or customisable jewellery. Not every ring design has the same resizing flexibility. A plain solitaire band can present a different situation from a full eternity design with stones around the complete circumference.

Do not assume a piece can be altered simply because another ring can. Ask what is technically possible for the specific design, whether alteration could affect stone settings and what terms apply. Aurelia should only publish resizing capabilities that have been operationally confirmed.

23. What Care Does This Particular Design Require?

Do not stop at: "Diamonds are durable." The jewellery also contains metal, settings and potentially many small stones. A pavé ring may require different practical attention from a bezel pendant. A tennis bracelet has many individual settings and a clasp. An earring has posts, backs or hinges.

24. What Return, Cancellation and After-Sales Terms Apply?

This is a commercial question rather than a gemmological one, but it can materially affect the purchase. Ask before submitting an order or enquiry: What happens if the piece does not suit you? Are custom or made-to-order products treated differently? What cancellation terms apply? What happens if sizing needs adjustment? What after-sales services are actually offered?

25. Am I Choosing the Complete Piece or Just Chasing One Headline Number?

This is the final and perhaps most useful question. A shopper can easily become focused on: 2 carats; D colour; VVS clarity; "Ideal"; or an impressive-looking report. But jewellery is experienced as a complete object.

A slightly smaller diamond with dimensions you prefer, an appropriate clarity grade, strong cut and a well-designed setting can be a more satisfying purchase than a larger stone chosen only because of its headline carat weight. Likewise, paying for microscopic colour or clarity differences makes little sense if those differences do not matter to you.

The final question should therefore be: Does the combination of diamond, setting, metal, dimensions, documentation, price and practical terms suit what I actually want?

Which Questions Matter Most If You Are Buying a Loose Lab-Grown Diamond?

If you are buying a loose stone for later setting, concentrate most strongly on Questions 1–14. You need to understand: its laboratory-grown identity, growth and treatment information where available, independent report, report type, report number, carat weight, dimensions, colour, clarity, cut or shape assessment, polish, symmetry and inclusions.

You can then compare it with genuinely similar alternatives. Questions about hallmarking, clasp construction or total jewellery dimensions obviously do not yet apply. This separation keeps the buying process relevant instead of mechanically applying a jewellery checklist to a loose stone.

Which Questions Matter Most for a Lab-Grown Diamond Engagement Ring?

For an engagement ring, both groups become important. Start with the centre diamond. Know what it is, how it was assessed and whether its appearance suits you. Then evaluate the ring. Consider precious metal, hallmarking where applicable, setting style, setting height, band dimensions, resizing possibilities and after-sales terms.

An excellent centre stone cannot tell you whether the finished ring will be comfortable or practical for daily wear.

Which Questions Matter Most for Lab-Grown Diamond Earrings?

For solitaire studs, determine whether each principal diamond has its own stated weight or whether the advertised figure is combined total carat weight. Check how well the pair is matched visually. Then consider the earring dimensions, setting and fastening system.

For pavé or multi-stone earrings, individual full reports for every tiny diamond may be neither necessary nor practical. Ask what documentation applies to the finished piece instead.

Which Questions Matter Most for a Tennis Bracelet?

Start with total carat weight, but do not stop there. Ask: How many diamonds contribute to that total? What is the approximate size of the individual stones? How long and wide is the bracelet? How are the stones secured? What type of clasp is used? What documentation covers the piece?

A 5 ct total-weight bracelet and a 5 ct solitaire are completely different jewellery propositions.

Which Questions Matter Most for a Lab-Grown Diamond Necklace?

Clarify whether the stated weight refers to a single pendant diamond or combined stones. Then check actual pendant dimensions, chain length and fastening. For multi-stone necklaces, total carat weight may be distributed across a large number of diamonds. Again, physical dimensions often tell you more about the finished visual scale than the headline carat figure alone.

Do You Need to Ask All 25 Questions Every Time?

No. The purpose of a checklist is to prevent important omissions, not make every purchase unnecessarily complicated. For a significant loose centre stone, Questions 1–14 are highly relevant. For finished jewellery, add the product-specific questions that apply.

For small fashion jewellery containing numerous accent diamonds, asking for individual grading reports for every tiny stone would be disproportionate. For a substantial solitaire centre diamond, independent stone-specific documentation becomes much more useful. Use judgement.

Red Flags to Notice Before Buying

A few patterns deserve closer scrutiny. Be cautious when the seller does not clearly say whether the diamond is laboratory-grown. Be cautious when "certified" appears repeatedly but no issuing laboratory or report type is identified. Be cautious when a product uses a large carat figure without clarifying whether it is individual weight or total carat weight.

Be cautious when colour, clarity, cut or report terminology is presented in ways that do not match the actual laboratory document. And be cautious when sustainability, ethical sourcing, resale, warranties or permanent-value claims are stated absolutely without evidence or clearly defined terms.

The goal is not to distrust every seller. It is to make sure the information needed for a meaningful comparison is actually present.

What Should You Not Obsess Over?

Do not automatically insist on the highest possible colour. Do not automatically insist on VVS or Internally Flawless clarity. Do not assume the biggest carat weight gives the largest-looking or best diamond. Do not assume "Ideal Cut" has one universal meaning across laboratories. Do not assume CVD is always better than HPHT. And do not assume a laboratory report tells you whether the complete ring or bracelet is well made.

Then look beyond the grading letters. Check carat weight together with millimetre dimensions. Understand colour and clarity instead of simply maximising them. Determine how cut was assessed for that particular shape and laboratory. Read polish, symmetry and significant inclusion information separately. Compare the stone with genuine alternatives.

If the diamond is already mounted, expand the evaluation to the complete piece. Clarify whether carat means individual or total weight. Check metal and applicable hallmarking. Understand the setting. Look at real dimensions. Know what documentation applies to the finished jewellery. Ask whether sizing or alteration is possible where relevant. Understand care requirements and commercial terms before committing.

Most importantly, do not buy a lab-grown diamond because one specification looks impressive. Buy the combination of diamond characteristics, visible appearance, jewellery construction and terms that best matches your priorities.
